River Enns Cycling Trail

Through the world of mountains and water

As an inside tip for nature lovers the route leads through the three states of Salzburg, Styria and Upper Austria. Imposing mountain character, romantic valleys, rushing torrents, sleepy villages and historic towns are your companions through the unique natural backdrop between the Dachstein and the Schladminger Tauern, the Gesäuse and the Reichramiger Hintergebirge.

You will experience impressive mountain and landscape character on your ride along the River Enns. You will be impressed at how the calm and pleasant Enns builds into a roaring, torrential river in the Gesäuse; as if were angry that the valley is not wider.

While the first section is about the high Alpine mountain landscape, the main feature of the second part is the River Enns itself. And like a good work of literature, after the torrential climax comes the gentle conclusion - through a landscape that enchants with its romantic villages and towns, orchards and meadows until the finish, where you choose whether to connect to the River Danube Cycling Trail. There are unforgettable culinary and cultural highlights waiting for you.

A brief summary of a few of the main features: The start at 1,200 metres at the foot of the Niedere Tauern. The impressive mountains and numerous swimming lakes. The historic cycling town of Schladming with its lively sports attractions, the imposing Grimming, Trautenfels Castle and Admont Abbey at the entrance to the Gesäuse National Park. And, of course, the old market town of Steyr and Upper Austria's oldest town, Enns.

The hilly ride with a series of small intermediate climbs is a challenge for any cyclist. There are also a number of attractive sporting detours in the picturesque tributary valleys. Along the route, cosy, selected private rooms, inns and hotels provide sustenance with suitable fare for cyclists and regional culinary delights.

Those wishing to discover even more rural beauty can find a range of possible connecting cycling trails along the River Enns Cycling Trail. These include, for example, the River Danube Cycling Trail, Europe's most famous cycling trail, or the River Mur Cycling Trail, which leads through Graz, Austria's epicurean capital, into Styrian Spa Country as far as Bad Radkersburg.
